In yet another sign of the craptacular financial clusterfuck our country is in, The Washington Post has announced it will do away with Book World, its regular book section. Book World is one of the last remaining stand-alone book review sections in a daily newspaper.
Books will now be a part of the Style and Outlook sections. Great…look for an in-depth criticism of Proust right below an article featuring the latest in pastel-colored legwarmers. Wait. Does anyone wear legwarmers anymore? Or am I the only one?
Deputy Editor Rachel Hartigan Shea, who probably does not wear legwarmers, says the Post prints around 900 book reviews every year. She is hoping the publication will not suffer more than a 25 percent drop in the number of reviews published. Details of the new approach, however, are not definite.
Book World’s final edition will be published next month.

Ok so I have a Macbook Pro and I wanted to partition the hard drive of my MBP so I could run Windows XP and Leopard. And also, I wanted to partition my portable 300Gb to where I would have all my iTunes junk on one partition and the other partition would be used for my computer backups. My BIG question is, if I partitioned my macbooks hd into 2 sections, would those 2 sections count as 1 partition on my portable hd or would I need to make an additional partition? In other words…would windows and OSX need their own partitions, or would the portable HD read fine with both OS’s on one partition. Any help would be VERY Appreciated!

I’m having to write a program to use the Bisection Method to calculate the roots of an equation. I pretty much have everything done for that part, but I don’t know how to read in an equation from the user. I need to be able to ask the user what the equation is that they are wanting to use, and then somehow convert it to a usable format. Someone told me that one of java’s preloaded classes has a tool to where you can read in the equation as a string, and java can plug in an ‘x’ value to find ‘y.’ That is what I’m kind of needing to do… Just something so that they enter in the formula and can plug in 2 values. What I tried doing was asking the user for the coefficients and storing them in an array. I then used a for loop to call back all the coefficients and multiply them by the ‘x’ value. Everything in my code says that it should work, but when I try running it, I guess it is too complex because it never returns an answer or even move on to the next step… Can anyone help make my life easier??? Thanks!

Ok i have a vista, and recently my mouse has been loading like ever 30 seconds. By loading, i mean like theres a little blue circle that spirals around, which usually appears when you refresh the page or something, the same thing as the hourglass in windows xp. When I turn on my laptop the screen fades white and a box comes up saying windows explorer has stopped working so I click close the program and it goes to my desktop except there’s no background and all the things like apps Nd folders are gone. I have been upgrading parts of my eMachines T6003 for sometime now and am now looking into getting a newer and hopefully more recent type of a processor for my computer. Except I am having trouble with finding out what is the best processor my computer can be upgraded to. It is currently running a 1.80 GHz AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Processor and it has a 2000 MHz System Bus. And I would like to upgrade to something like an AMD Phenom II type processor? I don’t think I’m losing the monitor, it’s a fairly new laptop designed for Windows XP by Dell. I’m renting to own it and before I’m done paying it off I want to make sure nothing is wrong with it. I was on the internet (Mozilla Firefox) and I was just browsing then a message came up and said something like ‘Windows defender needs you to restart your computer to solve a problem’ so I clicked it and then it obviously restarted. I tried to log onto my user area and it took longer than usual to load up and when it finally loaded up it had a blank background and my documents, no task-bar or shortcut. The only way I got onto the internet was by going on my downloads going on Spotify and then clicking on an advert, for the past couple of days I’ve been getting warnings saying that I have a harmful virus so I clicked ‘Remove’ and it said it had gone but every hour or so it kept coming back up. After I log in to the computer, my background appears, but the dock, menu bar, and all the stuff on the desktop doesn’t pop up. It’s just the background with no way to control anything. I have a bad virus on my computer. Not to long ago I had the fake security system known as, “Security tool” I got rid of most of it. When I say ‘Most’ I mean it’s not popping up every five seconds and screwing up my desktop. Once it was off, I’d using something everyone told me to use, and that was malwarebytes. I tried to install it using different names and such so the virus won’t recognize it, but it still would not install. And now, I believe the virus updated itself. Now, when I go on the internet and search on google, yahoo, etc. it redirects me. Also I can not open my task bar yet again, and I believe another fake security virus was placed onto my computer. I have a Dell Latitude Laptop using Windows XP. I took it to Geek Squad because it was skipping and the freezing up when I played DVDs or any kind of audio. I have a Dell Inspiron 530 with Vista. I downloaded a MS word file which was attached to an email (no viruses, as far as I know). I then right clicked on the icon and renamed the file. A new icon with the new name appeared, and works fine to open the file. The old icon remained on the desktop and will neither open nor delete. Earlier I kept getting notices from my computer about downloading anti-spyware and how my computer is at risk and how they found a bunch of trojans and worms on my computer. So I opened my McAfee (thats the security I use and I thought it would alert me for any problems) so I checked it, no sweat it said nothing was wrong, so I wrote off the ones my computer was sending me because I was on the internet and I was trying to find a profile layout generator, and I thought that maybe it was false. So just in case I decide to run a virus scan to make sure everything is cool. I walk away from my computer for a few moments, and when i come back my computer is off. So I try to reboot it and it wont work. It refuses to reboot in windows regular. It gets to the little microsoft booting screen and then right before it hits the little chime and windows logo it turns black and just stays like that and wont do anything else. So I tried running a system restore point and a start-up repair in safe mode, I thought it would fix, I try again to reboot it, it does the same thing. But before my computer went haywire my McAfee said nothing was wrong, now here I am in safe mode trying to fix my computer, and McAfee is alerting me about how all my files need attention and how there all at risk. I recently bought a laptop over Christmas along with Microsoft 2007 Home & Student and Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 (they are both on disc/CDs). Do I still need an internet connection for installing them, like if I was required to activate something online? So I got a new computer in the middle of October, it is a Toshiba Satellite A500/040, came with Windows vista Home premium. I got a Windows 7 upgrade disc that is only for my computer. I have upgraded my Laptop to windows 7 and am now having troubles… I think I picked up a few viruses and I am wanting to re-install windows to get my laptop back to normal. today a friend downloaded a .txt file on my computer and i later looked at it and it said it was about 8.4mb… which is incredibly large for a text file. i did put it into microsoft word and it said there was about 30,000 pages and roughly 1million words if that helps… but i just don’t know if there could somehow be a keylogger or virus hidden in that .txt file seeing it was so large.. i use firefox, and when to the downloads window and right clicked the original download, but it did not allow me to open the file or open the containing folder… i deleted it off of the downloads window i did a full virus scan on my computer and nothing came up- i also tried to do a system restore but it told me my anti virus program was preventing it from working. i disabled my anti-virus program and tried it again but system restore still didn’t work. i use norton anti-virus. long story short, from the information provided, i would like to know if i could possibly have a keylogger on my computer, how to detect it and how to remove it. thank you very much. Hi there. I would like to know what the following: ZoneAlarm, and Windows Defender will do for my laptop. I already have avast! 4 Home Edition installed, and would like to enhance my laptop’s security. Last night my computer rebooted without warning or explanation. It came back up with everything normal seeming so I assumed it was one of those bastard windows updates. About an hour later I was using firefox and then it stopped responding to clocks. Outside of firefox, a mouseclick was recognized once per item, but no more. Using alt + ctrl + del results in the icon for the system monitor showing up in the tasktray, but nothing more. I could not interact. I rebooted it in safe mode and used system restore to take it to about 3 days back. (I haven’t had any other day work so far and I’ve tried at least 10 different days.) I thought it had fixed it, and I left the computer running all night with no programs open. In the morning, I went to firefox and after about 10 minutes, everything locked again. Rebooted and tried internet explorer with the same result. I just now removed firefox 3.0 and then installed 3.5, but that didn’t change anything. While downloading new nvidia drivers (I suspect that it’s a graphical problem) the system locked again and I just now rebooted. I am very frustrated. Neither AVG nor SpyRemover find any viruses or other malware. They’re both up to date. Part of what is bothering me is that there are no symptoms of viruses or malware outside of this. I have some hard disk errors on a laptop I’m fixing for a friend. There were probably viruses that removed important system and boot files. I tried the Windows XP recovery CD but it didn’t work. Hey, Since defragging the disk won’t do much to improve Windows XP performance, here are 23 suggestions that will. Each can enhance the performance and reliability of your customers’ PCs. Best of all, most of them will cost you nothing. 1.) To decrease a system’s boot time and increase system performance, use the money you save by not buying defragmentation software — the built-in Windows defragmenter works just fine — and instead equip the computer with an Ultra-133 or Serial ATA hard drive with 8-MB cache buffer. 2.) If a PC has less than 512 MB of RAM, add more memory. This is a relatively inexpensive and easy upgrade that can dramatically improve system performance. 3.) Ensure that Windows XP is utilizing the NTFS file system. If you’re not sure, here’s how to check: First, double-click the My Computer icon, right-click on the C: Drive, then select Properties. Next, examine the File System type; if it says FAT32, then back-up any important data. Next, click Start, click Run, type CMD, and then click OK. At the prompt, type CONVERT C: /FS:NTFS and press the Enter key. This process may take a while; it’s important that the computer be uninterrupted and virus-free. The file system used by the bootable drive will be either FAT32 or NTFS. I highly recommend NTFS for its superior security, reliability, and efficiency with larger disk drives. 4.) Disable file indexing. The indexing service extracts information from documents and other files on the hard drive and creates a “searchable keyword index.” As you can imagine, this process can be quite taxing on any system.The idea is that the user can search for a word, phrase, or property inside a document, should they have hundreds or thousands of documents and not know the file name of the document they want. Windows XP’s built-in search functionality can still perform these kinds of searches without the Indexing service. It just takes longer. The OS has to open each file at the time of the request to help find what the user is looking for. Most people never need this feature of search. Those who do are typically in a large corporate environment where thousands of documents are located on at least one server. But if you’re a typical system builder, most of your clients are small and medium businesses. And if your clients have no need for this search feature, I recommend disabling it. Here’s how: First, double-click the My Computer icon. Next, right-click on the C: Drive, then select Properties.Uncheck “Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching.” Next, apply changes to “C: subfolders and files,” and click OK. If a warning or error message appears (such as “Access is denied”), click the Ignore All button. 5.) Update the PC’s video and motherboard chipset drivers. Also, update and configure the BIOS. For more information on how to configure your BIOS properly,see this article on my site. 6.) Empty the Windows Prefetch folder every three months or so. Windows XP can “prefetch” portions of data and applications that are used frequently. This makes processes appear to load faster when called upon by the user. That’s fine. But over time, the prefetch folder may become overloaded with references to files and applications no longer in use. When that happens, Windows XP is wasting time, and slowing system performance, by pre-loading them. Nothing critical is in this folder, and the entire contents are safe to delete. 7.) Once a month, run a disk cleanup. Here’s how: Double-click the My Computer icon. Then right-click on the C: drive and select Properties. Click the Disk Cleanup button — it’s just to the right of the Capacity pie graph — and delete all temporary files. 8.) In your Device Manager, double-click on the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers device, and ensure that DMA is enabled for each drive you have connected to the Primary and Secondary controller. Do this by double-clicking on Primary IDE Channel. Then click the Advanced Settings tab. Ensure the Transfer Mode is set to “DMA if available” for both Device 0 and Device 1. Then repeat this process with the Secondary IDE Channel. 9.) Upgrade the cabling. As hard-drive technology improves, the cabling requirements to achieve these performance boosts have become more stringent. Be sure to use 80-wire Ultra-133 cables on all of your IDE devices with the connectors properly assigned to the matching Master/Slave/Motherboard sockets. A single device must be at the end of the cable; connecting a single drive to the middle connector on a ribbon cable will cause signaling problems. With Ultra DMA hard drives, these signaling problems will prevent the drive from performing at its maximum potential. Also, because these cables inherently support “cable select,” the location of each drive on the cable is important. For these reasons, the cable is designed so drive positioning is explicitly clear. Hi Ok my grandma got a new desktop a few weeks ago, it came with a free trial of McAfee which I installed for her no probs (have it myself at home) She already bought a different antivirus package (Bulldog?) which I was going to install when the McAfee trial was up. Anyway my little brother has been up for xmas and since there’s only a few days of the McAfee trial left thought he would install it now for her. Out of no where. I keep getting messages that pop up stating that my computer is infected, danger, attention, etc… then it tells you to download or continue unprotected. Uniblue does make a AntiSpyware for computers called Spy Eraser. However as this one appears to be legite, its comprimising my computer. After searching for the file I found it not as a program on the computer, but as a file in System32. Every two minutes those messages come up. I can not exit the program or disable it. It appears as if its a legitimate program, an icon on the bar next to the clock and one implanted on the desk top. However I ran all my spyware programs, anti-virus’ programs and id failed to detect it. So I instaled MalwareBytes and it found it, and removed it. I ran it twice and everything else twice. Three hours later while the computer was siting, the message popped up. The icon reappeared on the desktop. The message continues every two minutes. Each message is similar but a little different from the rest. However it never changes its motive. I ran MalwareBytes again, it detected the infected files. So I did some research and found that I should use a program called RegCure to eliminate the rest of the files that were not being removed under the registry. It found 1242 infected files, and fixed them. However, I still find myself in the same boat. However I was told that I may not need to re-install the Windows, XP. The same day I uninstalled IE8 because it wasn’t displaying pages correctly Zone Alarm Firewall popped up an alert stateing IE was trying to access the internet - after I uninstalled it. I hit the deny button, but needless to say, I’m a little confused here. I’m running Windows XP SP3 on an HP Pavilion d4100e with Avira & ZA anti-virus suites & Windows Defender (they all seem to get along OK) & I run daily anti-virus scans. I uninstalled IE8 using “Add/Remove Windows Components” in the “Add/Remove Programs” feature of Control Panel. Does anyone out there have a clue? I’m posting this before trying my own Google search. I have tried downloads, on a variety of computers, which run everything from Windows 95, right up through XP. On every computer that I have ever tried, I have tried to stay on “safe” sites, such as Download.com, to download operations programs, screensavers, and so on (Download.com is just an example, of dozens of so-called web-sites I have tried). Wouldn’t you know it, though. At evewry single site, that I can mention, I have brought back viruses, worms, and “tons” of spy-ware. And this is from the “clean”, “safe”, web-sites. I know that the best hackers can penetrate any connection, including D.S.L., dial-up, and any other connection, to inject bad codes into home computers. Hi, i had my laptop about 3 weeks ago and 1 week ago i went to log into my account and after i put my password in and clicked enter it said welcome with the loading icon and just stayed like that. It did this every time i tried to log on. I could start it in safe mode. I just wiped my computer clean and started again with the disk. The same thing happened yesterday. I do not have a virus after doing scans from Mcafee and two other virus scans and they all found nothing. Last night my computer rebooted without warning or explanation. It came back up with everything normal seeming so I assumed it was one of those bastard windows updates. About an hour later I was using firefox and then it stopped responding to clocks. Outside of firefox, a mouseclick was recognized once per item, but no more. Using alt + ctrl + del results in the icon for the system monitor showing up in the tasktray, but nothing more. I could not interact. I rebooted it in safe mode and used system restore to take it to about 3 days back. (I haven’t had any other day work so far and I’ve tried at least 10 different days.) I thought it had fixed it, and I left the computer running all night with no programs open. In the morning, I went to firefox and after about 10 minutes, everything locked again. Rebooted and tried internet explorer with the same result. I just now removed firefox 3.0 and then installed 3.5, but that didn’t change anything. While downloading new nvidia drivers (I suspect that it’s a graphical problem) the system locked again and I just now rebooted. I am very frustrated. Neither AVG nor SpyRemover find any viruses or other malware. They’re both up to date. Part of what is bothering me is that there are no symptoms of viruses or malware outside of this. In some ways, that would almost be preferable. At the moment though, I am stuck, so please do what you can to help. My laptop recently got a virus on it from windows and there was no way of fixing it so i had to wipe the computer clean. The people at the computer place backed up all my stuff. SO i have my computer now and i havee all my documents and pictures. I dont have all my programs that i had, like itunes. today a friend downloaded a .txt file on my computer and i later looked at it and it said it was about 8.4mb… which is incredibly large for a text file. i did put it into microsoft word and it said there was about 30,000 pages and roughly 1million words if that helps… but i just don’t know if there could somehow be a keylogger or virus hidden in that .txt file seeing it was so large.. i use firefox, and when to the downloads window and right clicked the original download, but it did not allow me to open the file or open the containing folder… i deleted it off of the downloads window i did a full virus scan on my computer and nothing came up- i also tried to do a system restore but it told me my anti virus program was preventing it from working. i disabled my anti-virus program and tried it again but system restore still didn’t work. i use norton anti-virus. long story short, from the information provided, i would like to know if i could possibly have a keylogger on my computer, how to detect it and how to remove it. thank you very much. My computer decided to kick off the end of the year by picking up something that is making it act whacky. My AV (McAfee) is logging and blocking something called winupdate86 from creating files. Now it seems that every 20 minutes there is a pop up that states that Windows will download a anti spyware program. This is the first time that this has happened to me, so I don’t know how to handle it. I don’t even know if this is spyware, malware, adware or trojan. Even my AV is logging all this it is still does not seem to see this as a problem. So if you could help by answering some questions I would greatly appreciate it. 1. My computer has two hard drives. The AV is logging and blocking files in the first hard drive. Is the second hard drive infected? 2. What free programs are out there to help remove this from my computer? 3. My friend had an executable file that kept trying to log onto the internet. He fixed it by changing the .exe in the file to a .txt. If I know what files are causing the problem can I do the same thing, without harming my computer? 4. Can I take both hard drives, place them in external hard drive enclosures and have a friend with a clean computer scan them to find and remove the problem? 5. Could AVG be downloaded onto a thumb drive and then used to scan my computer? 6. Would it be possible to move files from the second hard drive to an external hard drive without infecting anything? 7. All my friends have Vista or Windows 7. I used Windows XP. If they decided to scan my computer would this cause a conflict with my drives. That is it for now. I am kind paranoid about downloading and installing anything right now. If you can answer all the questions and give me any direction I would greatly appreciate it. Personally I never have 2 Anti-Virus programs installed at the same time. They seem to have a knack for totally screwing each other up. Brand New Gateway PC SX2800-03 Windows Vista Home 64bit with SP1 Intel Core2 Quad Q8200 4gigs of DDR3 for RAM Intel GMA X4500 Intergrated video (vga and hdmi outputs) 640 gig My friend just got this pc for Christmas. They were installing softwares. They must have downloaded a crappy software to get this error. The last software they installed and all the problems started after the install was iTunes. Probaly didn’t get it directly from Apple and got it from another fake website or something. OR maybe he may have visited an adult site and gotten the trojan/virus. Heck I don’t know cause the dang thing wont boot up. I am running Windows XP SP3 and am connected to the internet through a Comcast modem and Belkin router. It says my internet connection is excellent and this problem does not occur on the other laptop in the house. I have tried many things and there are no viruses or firewall problems. I decided to run IE’s diagnostic thing. It said there was some problem, that I was told could be solved by using Winsock XP Fix (because whenever IE tried to fix it, it claimed it fixed it and to restart my computer, but then when I would restart, the problem would still occur and be detected). So I was surfing the internet like I usually do and suddenly Google Chrome shuts down. Now this program called “Antivirus Live” appears to have installed itself. Now as a limited user on this computer, I have no idea this program got in since I can’t download anything anyway. I have gotten its counterpart, Antivirus 2008 before and successfully removed it as a limited user but this one is proving to be a challenge. Okay. So number one problem is I have to type slowly, or my sentences look like this- “elo ow are yo ad wha is going o?” My laptop has touch sensor buttons at the top too that don’t seem to work at ALL. Or the touch pad at all. It’s a dell with vista. I have done virus scans and nothing has came up. I usually use a cordless mouse but it has never affected it before. And if it makes a difference I am on it up to 3 hours a day. Alright, today it seems like my mom’s computer has a virus attack… so I just try to find a way to fix it, but i can’t, why? BECAUSE EVERY SINGLE PROGRAM IS INFECTED. I found it hard to believe that everything could be infected and thought it was just an antivirus plot for us to buy something. We don’t have really have an antivirus (Just the standard free scan only that come installed every computer) but a thing that keeps popping up is antivirus live or something along the lines of that. It isn’t safe, we tried installing an antivirus but after it installed, we couldn’t use it, it had been affected as well. Before we ran a sweep with spy sweeper and only cookies showed up. I have some hard disk errors on a laptop I’m fixing for a friend. There were probably viruses that removed important system and boot files. I tried the Windows XP recovery CD but it didn’t work. I’m now running a program called HDAT2 to check and repair bad sectors. However, if I decided to use their option of “wiping hard drive/disk”, does the hard drive become useless? My computer was running just fine until I visited a normal, news website, one that I visited a 1000 times, and my computer became infected with one of those Fake “Anti-Spyware” viruses. I used both Super Anti-spyware and Malwarebyte’s malware programs to finally get rid of that virus, and I rebooted my computer. The virus is gone, my computer is running fine again, except I can’t use the Internet Explorer or Safari web browsers (I’m using Netscape now). Whenever I open a window in IE or Safari, I get an error message, “Cannot display web page.” This happened once before, and I used the System Restore function to take my computer back to a time before a virus hit. But now, System Restore won’t start, nor can I get my computer to work in Safe Mode. How do I get System Restore to start up again? I tried several different ways, but nothing is working. Help! My Dell D820’s touchpad is not working correctly. I can move the cursor, but it won’t click on anything. There doesn’t seem to be anything preventing the buttons from moving (dirt under buttons). Whenever I try to uninstall Spy Sweeper, I get a prompt saying the uninstall program doesn’t exist (same result whether I do this through Start menu or Add or Remve Programs). I DLed Ccleaner and Revo but they don’t uninstall it either. I also tried reinstalling and then uninstalling but the installation cannot be completed because of an error. Using the cd won’t do the trick either; it cannot complete installation (error message). What may have caused this is a recent system restore that I had executed to prevent the progression of a virus after Spy Sweeper had already been uninstalled (I think). Let me start off by saying what actually happens with videos. Whenever a page comes up that has a potential video on it, ones in which you can click a play button, my computer freezes up immediately. I ran a virus scan and there are no viruses. Literally, a second after the page comes up it freezes and the “program is not responding”. It was working fine early today. Now that I think back though, a message came up that was asking for me to grant permission or something and I may have clicked never but I can’t remember what is was asking for etc. Are there any common downloads I could do or any security options that I can get around?

Recently my computer has been popping up blue stop screens, it has something to do with thekernell memory dump or something, so I copied all my files onto my flash drive and now the flash drives has a file on it that is saved as “BOOTEX”. I have a Dell Latitude Laptop using Windows XP. I took it to Geek Squad because it was skipping and the freezing up when I played DVDs or any kind of audio. When it freezes I have to turn it off witut shutting it down. It also wouldn’t freeze right away..it freezes into about 10 minutes of playing DVDs or youtube videos. Earlier I kept getting notices from my computer about downloading anti-spyware and how my computer is at risk and how they found a bunch of trojans and worms on my computer. So I opened my McAfee (thats the security I use and I thought it would alert me for any problems) so I checked it, no sweat it said nothing was wrong, so I wrote off the ones my computer was sending me because I was on the internet and I was trying to find a profile layout generator, and I thought that maybe it was false. So just in case I decide to run a virus scan to make sure everything is cool. I walk away from my computer for a few moments, and when i come back my computer is off. So I try to reboot it and it wont work. It refuses to reboot in windows regular. It gets to the little microsoft booting screen and then right before it hits the little chime and windows logo it turns black and just stays like that and wont do anything else. So I tried running a system restore point and a start-up repair in safe mode, I thought it would fix, I try again to reboot it, it does the same thing. But before my computer went haywire my McAfee said nothing was wrong, now here I am in safe mode trying to fix my computer, and McAfee is alerting me about how all my files need attention and how there all at risk.

OMFG it JUST took me 25 minutes just to load up yahoo answers. My computer is REALLT slow now [laptop] Here are the things i used. Regardless its still slow. 1. Malwarebytes - Used that and no malicious items were found 2. AVG Free 9.0 - Scanned today [also updated] and no infections found 3. Disk Defragement - I did that today but still slow 4. CCleaner - Cleaned registry, yet it is still slow 5. Cookies and Squlite files - delete those everyday, yet my computer is still slow 6. Avast - Scanned for viruses and non were found, yet my computer STILL goes slow. its not my specs or anything. Even when i play games [there are no games on here] it laggs and my specs are above recommendation. When i exit game, computer goes ******* slow as hell so i know its not my specs. it started a couple of weeks ago, the keyboard and touch pad stopped working, thought it must be a virus so ran scans with AVG and Avira but nothing showed, the problem seems intermittent, sometimes everything seems fine and then it all goes weired again usually starting with the curser either not responding or jumping all over the screen and sometimes disappearing altogether. I have ran C cleaner, Spy-bot and a couple of hours ago cleaned the registry with Reg-cure, apparently I had over 2000 problems, none of these made any difference. I decided to do a full recovery but when I follow the instructions and try to boot from the recovery disc it just tries to boot normally and asks for my account password which I cant enter because the keyboard ain’t working. It was awhile ago when I saw it, but there is apparently something you can download and burn to a disk and it will delete just about everything from your computer to make reformatting easier. Anybody know what the website is? There are missing, necessary files on our desktop or there may have been a virus and now its all screwy. I’ve had my laptop for approximately two years and all of a sudden it has started to shut down constantly. I have a virus which disables safemode theirs a program that forces the computer into safe mode I ran it and my computer is trying to go into safe mode but the virus is disabling it and causing y computer to endlessly loop and not turn on, ever! To decrease a system’s boot time and increase system performance, use the money you save by not buying defragmentation software — the built-in Windows defragmenter works just fine — and instead equip the computer with an Ultra-133 or Serial ATA hard drive with 8-MB cache buffer. 2.) If a PC has less than 512 MB of RAM, add more memory. This is a relatively inexpensive and easy upgrade that can dramatically improve system performance. 3.) Ensure that Windows XP is utilizing the NTFS file system. If you’re not sure, here’s how to check: First, double-click the My Computer icon, right-click on the C: Drive, then select Properties. Next, examine the File System type; if it says FAT32, then back-up any important data. Next, click Start, click Run, type CMD, and then click OK. At the prompt, type CONVERT C: /FS:NTFS and press the Enter key. This process may take a while; it’s important that the computer be uninterrupted and virus-free. The file system used by the bootable drive will be either FAT32 or NTFS. I highly recommend NTFS for its superior security, reliability, and efficiency with larger disk drives. 4.) Disable file indexing. The indexing service extracts information from documents and other files on the hard drive and creates a “searchable keyword index.” As you can imagine, this process can be quite taxing on any system.The idea is that the user can search for a word, phrase, or property inside a document, should they have hundreds or thousands of documents and not know the file name of the document they want. Windows XP’s built-in search functionality can still perform these kinds of searches without the Indexing service. It just takes longer. The OS has to open each file at the time of the request to help find what the user is looking for. Most people never need this feature of search. Those who do are typically in a large corporate environment where thousands of documents are located on at least one server. But if you’re a typical system builder, most of your clients are small and medium businesses. And if your clients have no need for this search feature, I recommend disabling it. Here’s how: First, double-click the My Computer icon. Next, right-click on the C: Drive, then select Properties.Uncheck “Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching.” Next, apply changes to “C: subfolders and files,” and click OK. If a warning or error message appears (such as “Access is denied”), click the Ignore All button. 5.) Update the PC’s video and motherboard chipset drivers. Also, update and configure the BIOS. For more information on how to configure your BIOS properly,see this article on my site. 6.) Empty the Windows Prefetch folder every three months or so. Windows XP can “prefetch” portions of data and applications that are used frequently. This makes processes appear to load faster when called upon by the user. That’s fine. But over time, the prefetch folder may become overloaded with references to files and applications no longer in use. When that happens, Windows XP is wasting time, and slowing system performance, by pre-loading them. Nothing critical is in this folder, and the entire contents are safe to delete. 7.) Once a month, run a disk cleanup. Here’s how: Double-click the My Computer icon. Then right-click on the C: drive and select Properties. Click the Disk Cleanup button — it’s just to the right of the Capacity pie graph — and delete all temporary files. 8.) In your Device Manager, double-click on the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers device, and ensure that DMA is enabled for each drive you have connected to the Primary and Secondary controller. Do this by double-clicking on Primary IDE Channel. Then click the Advanced Settings tab. Ensure the Transfer Mode is set to “DMA if available” for both Device 0 and Device 1. Then repeat this process with the Secondary IDE Channel. 9.) Upgrade the cabling. As hard-drive technology improves, the cabling requirements to achieve these performance boosts have become more stringent. Be sure to use 80-wire Ultra-133 cables on all of your IDE devices with the connectors properly assigned to the matching Master/Slave/Motherboard sockets. A single device must be at the end of the cable; connecting a single drive to the middle connector on a ribbon cable will cause signaling problems. With Ultra DMA hard drives, these signaling problems will prevent the drive from performing at its maximum potential. Also, because these cables inherently support “cable select,” the location of each drive on the cable is important. For these reasons, the cable is designed so drive positioning is explicitly clear. Ok, Norton picked up a few viruses on my computer called JS.SecurityToolFraud and a few others which Norton didn’t give names (They Were Trojans) too. Now Norton Says it got rid of these viruses and i need too take no action. Then i got a notice saying something along the lines of ” A seciruty risk appeared, no futher action needed. My computer was acting real funny, hanging up in the middle of processes, not letting me access task manager to quit them, etc.. I started in Safe Mode with networking and completed a full virus scan. I ran Chkdsk and it took 18 hours. It replaced bad clusters in about 20 files. Now Windows won’t start. It gives me the option to repair and I click on it, but nothing ever happens other than a black screen with my cursor arrow on it. I tried to start Windows normally and the same thing happens. I have some hard disk errors on a laptop I’m fixing for a friend. There were probably viruses that removed important system and boot files. I tried the Windows XP recovery CD but it didn’t work. I’m now running a program called HDAT2 to check and repair bad sectors. However, if I decided to use their option of “wiping hard drive/disk”, does the hard drive become useless? Or can I still install Windows on it using an ISO CD?

Laptop: Lenovo Y410 OS: win XP sp3 AntiVirus: Norton Internet Security 2009 Back in the Philippines, I was using my laptop normally. No problems. I could connect to the internet, download stuff with p2p, etc. About a week ago, we arrived in Las Vegas and have been living with my uncle’s. I was enjoyed his really really fast internet (well, compared to my connection back in the Philippines, It was incredibly fast). I was able to download stuff of interest and also surf normally. The problem occurred after I visited a pornsite (and I’ve been visiting this pornsite back then so, I had confidence that It didn’t pose a threat to my system) (and please, I don’t give a **** about what you think about me If I visit porn sites) My laptop started hanging. I have to hold the power button just to turn it off. Usually, windows would show an error that “the laptop didn’t turn off properly” blah blah… It didn’t. After my next attempts of rebooting the laptop, about 5 minutes into operation, it would slow down, and after a few seconds, it would freeze and after trying to run task manager, it would sound off a loud beep that wouldn’t end unless I turn off the laptop by holding the power button. This happens when I’m connected to the net. This also happens when I’m not connected but gives my laptop more normal run time, and eventually hangs. I tried running system restore, It said that “it couldn’t help solve the problem”. I tried running system restore while in safe mode and it was successful. I rebooted back into normal and the same problem occurred (hang, loud beep). I tried doing a system scan in safemode (since in normal mode, it would hang right away), and it found 1 threat (mebroot) and said (Norton) to have resolved it. Fortunately, I had a back up OS (win XPsp3 again installed on a separate partition). I ran it, and connected to the internet. I surfed to google, fry’s, target, (since I was shopping for stuff). After about 20 minutes into browsing, the same thing happened to my laptop (without browsing porn). It hanged, and sounded a loud beep again. My laptop is a year old, and warranty doesn’t cover it any more. I want to know if I’m having hardware problems or software problems. Thanks! Happy New Year!

I have a Dell Latitude Laptop using Windows XP. I took it to Geek Squad because it was skipping and the freezing up when I played DVDs or any kind of audio. When it freezes I have to turn it off witut shutting it down. It also wouldn’t freeze right away..it freezes into about 10 minutes of playing DVDs or youtube videos. It was also making weird noises when it froze. Best Buy informed me that the noise wasn’t any hardware issue, but the kind of noise the computer makes when it’s frozen. They said nothing was wrong hardware wise, and that I had 6 viruses on the laptop. Well now, all those viruses are removed, and my laptop is still skipping and freezing when I play DVDs..to the point where I have to turn off the computer without shutting it down. Recently, my clipta.com toolbar seems to be malfunctioning. Whenever I want to download a video, it only allows me to download a small portion of a video - say, I wanted to download a 99MB video, I was only able to download about an eighth of it. I do not know what is happening, but I have also been experiencing from strange redirections - when I click on a link from a Google Search, I get redirected all the time to another page completely, and I have to go back and do it a few times before it works, sometimes. Could it be a trojan or a virus or something? - because all my troubles started, I think (but I’m not that sure) when I downloaded a .exe file. When I opened it, it didn’t work. My security software detected a threat, and labelled it as “High” in risk level. Changes, according to my Internet Seurity Software, have also been made to my system files. It also seems that it may be a trojan horse. Could this be linked to my inability to download FULL versions of videos using my clipta.com toolbar? I use Mozilla Firefox (v. 3.5.5). I logged on today and it just wasn’t there. It’s not hidden. I’ve tried putting explorer into the task manager and it popped up for a couple seconds then disappeared again. Im not sure if it’s got virus. But, when i switch on the laptop it shows the make and the “windows” thing. Shuts down by itself.. And opens automatically. This goes on till yu switch it off by pressing the power button.
