The New Yorker Hosts Online Book Club

The New Yorker, quite possibly the coolest magazine on the planet, launched their own book club yesterday. The mag promises “the book club will be an ongoing collaboration between our editors and writers and our audience.”

They also promise to choose works that will generate questions, discussion, and debate. According to The New Yorker website: “We plan to approach the books as landscapes for exploration, in which we are the park rangers, if you will, examining the flora and the fauna and fending off the occasional wild animal. (Every good book has one.)”

This month’s selection is Revolutionary Road, the brilliant 1961 novel by Richard Yates and the basis for the hit film (which was robbed of Best Actor and Actress nominations).

Pop on over to The New Yorker to register; then read and talk amongst yourselves!

Lost Tolkein Book to be Published

Oh Jebus, I think I just heard every hobbit fanatic — including my own beloved snarkpanion — simultaneously orgasm.

Yup, that’s right, an obscure manuscript by the Hobbitmeister himself, J.R.R. Tolkein, will be published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in May. The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun is a retelling of ancient Norse epics and relates the story of the hero Sigurd, a dragon-slayer, and his wife Gudrun, as they seek vengeance on the Niflungs. Yeah, I’m not sure what that means either.

The entire text is in verse, and Tolkein’s son, Christopher, will provide an introduction and notes to the book.

The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun was penned in the 1920s and 30s while Tolkein was teaching at Oxford. This manuscript was written before The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings trilogy and before the author had achieved international acclaim.

Hey, as long as Viggo Mortensen plays Sigurd in the movie version, that’s all I care about.

Australian Romance Readers Convention Seeks Donations

In the shadow of the tragic wildfires that had ravaged Australia in recent weeks, the Australian Romance Readers Convention is putting together a silent auction to benefit the Australian Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal. The convention and auction will take place this weekend, February 20-22, at the Jasper Hotel in Melbourne.

A slew of bitchin’ authors, publishers, and other businesses have already donated some way-cool stuff. Among the items so far: signed books, posters, t-shirts, interviews, even an autographed quilt, tickets to a Chris Isaak (yum) concert, and–my personal favorite–a character named after you in a romance novel. Oh, what I wouldn’t give….

So if you are a romance reader in southern Australia, be sure to hop on over to the Jasper Hotel in Melbourne this weekend for some top-notch romancing and place your bids for items in this ever-growing collection of goodies. And if you’re an author, publisher, or any other enterprise, think of donating a little somethin’-somethin’ to the ARRC’s auction.

Visit the ARRC website for more details.

      WHAT IS A SNARK?

The Snark is a creature created by Lewis Carroll in his poem "The Hunting of the Snark". To give a proper description of Snarks, one must look no further than Carroll himself, who summed them up in one word: Unimaginable.

But this much we do know: some have feathers, some have whiskers. Snarks sleep a lot, yet they are an ambitious lot -- with very little sense of humor. They love bathing-machines and tend to bring them wherever they go; they are also handy for striking a light. Snarks live on a far-off island, a place filled with chasms and crags, and are constantly on the lookout for Snark-hunters. Their mortal enemies are hope, care, thimbles and forks.
